Our hair is constantly renewing itself. A single hair emerges, grows, then falls out, as part of a hair cycle that repeats itself about 25 times during our lifetime and occurs in three stages.


The Anagen phase, or growth phase, lasts between 3 - 8 years. Under normal conditions, about 85% of our hair are in the anagen phase. During this phase, the dermal papilla and germinal matrix are communicating and replicating, growing the hair shaft.


The catagen phase, or regression phase, which is fairly brief (2 to 3 weeks), is where the hair follicle regresses and prepares to rest. The dermal papilla detaches from the germinal matrix and cell replication ceases.


The telogen phase is a period of rest for the hair follicle components. This period of renewal lasts approx 3 months, after which a new hair begins to form and enter anagen, pushing the old hair out of the follicular pore. We normally lose around 100 hairs everyday because of this.

The underlying causes of hair loss are varied and complex. However, the process of hair loss and thinning sometimes referred to as follicular miniaturization, is the same in both men and women. Hair naturally goes through cycles of growth, rest and release/fall, With the growth cycle normally lasting 3 - 8 years. Things such as hormones, genetics, changes in diet, stress and age can upset the hair cycle process and this leads to hair cycle shortening. Specifically, the growth phase, known as anagen, becomes very short, the follicles undergo a process of miniaturization where they shrink and hairs become thinner and less substantial as they transition from terminal to vellus hair. After an extended period of hair cycle dysfunction, the arrector pilli muscle detaches, the reservoirs of stem cells are lost and hair follicles may die.

The technology achieves this by blocking a hair cycle regulatory protein called FGF5. ln the hair cycle, FGF5 is the key regulatory signal initiating the transition between anagen (growth) and catagen (rest), so by blocking FGF5 hair stays growing for longer and the hair cycle is restored to its natural length. The only known role of FGF5 in healthy adults is to signal the transition of hair follicles out of the growth (anagen) phase and into the resting phase (catagen). As described above, hair cycle dysfunction and shortening of anagen are key features of pattern hair loss, age related hair loss, and post stress or trauma (including chemotherapy). Extending anagen by blocking FGF5 is effective in restoring the hair cycle, reducing hair fall, and increasing the proportion of actively growing follicles.
