About 2-HOBA

2-HOBA is a natural molecule discovered in Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat. Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat has been used traditionally for many generations, and it has only recently been discovered for use in dietary supplements, as the patented extraction method used to obtain HobamineTM (2-HOBA) is new.

2-HOBA is unique in that it supports the cells defences against the molecules that are produced as a result of oxidative stress and free radical damage (reactive carbonyl species). All without affecting healthy levels of free-radicals, that the cells require to function normally.

What are free radicals?
Free radicals are atoms with an incomplete outer shell and because of this, they are are unstable. To make up the number of electrons in their outer shell and become stable, they react quickly with other substances. Antioxidants are special molecules that donate electron(s) to the free radical stabilising them and reducing the damage they can cause to our cells. An excess of free radicals over time causes a phenomenon called oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can be damaging to cells and their components and can be caused by factors including:

→ Exposure to toxic chemicals
→ Smoking
→ Diets high in sugar, fats and alcohol
→ UV radiation

2-HOBA is a compound found in Himalayan Tartary Buckwheat that supports your DNA's defences against free radical damage. It acts as a scavenger for reactive carbonyl species that cause stress in cells.

Free radicals in our body cause stress in our cells by binding to proteins, resulting in modifications and mutations which can lead to cellular damage. 2-HOBA scavenges for these free radicals and due to its chemical structure are able to bind to them, thus preventing the chain reaction of cellular damage from occurring and promote healthy function.

Free radicals aren't all that bad

Many people have been led to believe that free radicals are bad for us, but this is not strictly accurate as you need healthy levels of free radicals for our cells to work properly.

Cells use free radicals to communicate with each other through signalling pathways, and immune cells harness free radicals as a first line of defence against foreign bodies.

Your body also uses free radicals as part of a process to remove cells in the body that are no longer useful, to prevent them from causing harm to the surrounding healthy cells. For these reasons, a certain level of free radicals are necessary for your body to perform at its best. The issue we face today is the risk of eliminating these beneficial free radicals, which can compromise normal function and immune system capacity.

To support defences against oxidative stress we can take antioxidants. However, to fully mitigate the effects of oxidative stress we would need to take massive doses of antioxidants which would interfere with healthy free radical signalling mechanisms that are important health.

Alternatively, one can supplement with 2-HOBA which supports healthy levels of free radical signaling and supports cells that may be exposed to oxidative stress.
